Notes & Sources

  1. Cabinet Office of Japan, national holidays under the Act on National Holidays: www8.cao.go.jp/chosei/shukujitsu. 2026 comprises 16 statutory holidays plus one substitute holiday and one citizens' holiday, for 18 days off in total.
  2. Constitution Memorial Day (03 May 2026) falls on a Sunday. Because 04 May and 05 May are already holidays, the substitute holiday moves to Wed 06 May, extending Golden Week.
  3. Under the Act, a working day falling between two national holidays itself becomes a holiday. Respect for the Aged Day (Mon 21 Sep) and Autumnal Equinox Day (Wed 23 Sep) make Tue 22 Sep a citizens' holiday, creating a 5-day "Silver Week" from Sat 19 Sep to Wed 23 Sep.
