Notes & Sources

  1. Employment New Zealand (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment), public holidays and anniversary dates: employment.govt.nz/leave-and-holidays/public-holidays. Legal basis: Holidays Act 2003. Matariki is set in advance by the statutory schedule of fixed dates in the Act; for 2026 that date is Fri 10 Jul.
  2. Anzac Day (Sat 25 Apr 2026) and Boxing Day (Sat 26 Dec 2026) both fall on a Saturday and are "Mondayised". This does not simply move the holiday: for an employee who would not normally work that Saturday, the public holiday is observed on the following Monday (27 Apr and 28 Dec respectively, listed above); for an employee who would normally work that Saturday, the actual weekend date remains the public holiday. Both dates carry legal status depending on the employee's normal work pattern, and the holiday is observed once per employee.
  3. Coverage here is the public holidays observed throughout New Zealand. Each region also observes its own anniversary day (for example Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury), which is set locally and varies by region; these regional days are not included.
